The Appalachian Voice: Battling for Black Lung Benefits

October 18, 2018 Black Lung

ACLC attorney Evan Smith was quoted in Kevin Ridder’s article about the impending decrease in funding for federal black lung benefits.  Unless Congress acts before the end of the year, tax revenues to compensate disabled coal miners and their widows will be cut by more than half. As Evan notes, “without any congressional action, the [federal black lung disability] trust fund’s debt is going to be far worse than it’s ever been in the past.”  Increasing the trust fund’s debt risks the modest benefits and healthcare that disabled miners and their families depend on in central Appalachia.
