WKYT: With Funding Set to be Cut, Kentucky Miners, Advocates Rally for Black Lung Benefits

WKYT reports on the Black Lung Rally held in London, KY, on Wednesday in front of Senator Mitch McConnell’s office. Miners, widows, and community members showed up to the rally to demand an extension of the Black Lung Excise Tax before the end of the year. The Southeast Kentucky Black Lung Association, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth staff, and Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center staff were present to support the rally.

“‘We have coal miners walk into our office everyday disabled due to black lung, and the trust fund is important to provide for these people. And we need to make sure that it’ll be there for the future,’ said Evan Smith, an attorney at the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center.”
