Advocacy
what we do
It continues to be clear that strong policy and advocacy work is needed in the region to move towards a fair and equitable economic transition in the region.
ACLC impacts policy through state and federal legislation, comment submissions to agency rulemaking, and by setting new precedents in case law. We collaborate closely with local, regional, and national organizations.
The change we seek:
Our current policy platforms
After a devastating flood affected our region and our workplace in 2022, in partnership with nearly 40 organizations in the Appalachian region, we developed and endorse a federal policy platform to build flood resilience and improve disaster recovery. Read the full platform here.
There are too many mines in Kentucky and the Central Appalachian region that are no longer producing coal nor being reclaimed expediently. Read our policy platform to learn more about the federal reforms we believe will help address these issues. Learn more about the issue at www.zombiemines.org.
We support and help organize the following coalitions:
RECLAIM Coalition
to support legislation that funds the reclamation of abandoned mine lands
Black Lung Advocacy
to push for legislation that protects benefits for miners and their families
East Kentucky Water Network
to collaborate on water testing, raising awareness, and building power
Water Equity & Climate Resilience Caucus
to collaborate on drinking water affordability and access
Just Transition Allies Group
to plan shared strategies and collaborate with aligned organization in Kentucky
