what we do
Extreme rainfall and destructive flooding are becoming more common across Central Appalachia. The magnitude of damage caused by these events can in part be attributed to decades of strip mining and logging that have reshaped mountain topography and watersheds.
ACLC’s flood resilience work grew out of our own experience during the 2022 Eastern Kentucky floods that devastated our county. Since then, we have pressed for disaster policy reform that reflects the realities of rural mountain communities. Following the floods, ACLC expanded beyond immediate disaster recovery support to develop long-term flood resilience policy for Appalachia.
